Clear a house with your estate records safe. Separate home-care supplies. Agree what the crew will leave behind.
Decide what can leave before anyone loads the truck
Decide what should happen to the belongings before you clear the house. Empty rooms too soon and you could lose records needed to settle the estate. A promised heirloom could leave with unwanted furniture. Before the crew arrives, sort everything into groups: keep, review, sell or give away, and throw away.
Start with the local Register of Wills for a deceased Howard County resident's estate paperwork. Maryland's estate guidance says you must file the original will. For a regular estate, the personal representative must file an inventory within three months after appointment. It must describe the property. It must also give its value at the date of death. Small estates and modified administration follow different procedures. Do not treat this as a deadline for every cleanout.
Set aside wills, account statements, deeds, photographs and anything whose ownership is disputed. Have the person authorised to direct the work approve the removal list. A hauler's offer to buy furniture does not replace the estate's required valuation. Photograph rooms before the agreed contents leave. Keep a list of those items too. These steps help protect you. They do not replace the required estate filings.

Price the rooms and the work, not just the truck
We could not find a primary-source price schedule for private whole-house or estate cleanouts in Howard County. We have no supported local price range to give you. We could not establish a standard time to finish either. Alpha Ridge's published charges on the Howard County junk-removal page are facility fees. They do not price the crew's work inside your house.
Walk through the house with the crew before asking for an estimate. Show them the attic, basement, closets, shed and any locked rooms. Point out furniture that must come apart. Show them the stairs they must use. Explain how far they must carry each load. Agree whether they will sort drawers. Settle whether they will pack belongings you want to keep. They may only carry away items you have already marked.
Ask for a written quote that explains:
- Whether the price covers the listed contents or changes with truck space, weight or labour time.
- Whether separate trips for reusable goods and sensitive records cost extra.
- What happens to the price when the crew finds unlisted contents.
- Whether an offer to buy estate items appears as a separate credit. The quote should name those items.
Keep attached fixtures separate from loose belongings on your list. Describe any work to tear out carpet or cabinets separately. Ask what “empty the house” includes. Will the crew sweep up? Will they clean cupboards? Will they leave rooms ready for another trade?

Keep the filing cabinet out of the mixed load
Check papers before you shred them. You may still need a sensitive document to settle the estate. Keep papers you need somewhere the crew will not mistake them for another box to clear. Agree who will take unwanted papers to a shredder. Settle how you will keep them secure until then.
Howard County's next published Big Shred event has these limits:
| Event detail | Published arrangement |
|---|---|
| Date | October 17, 2026 |
| Hours | 9 a.m.–1 p.m., or until trucks fill |
| Resident allowance | Up to three bags or boxes |
| Locations | North Laurel Community Center; Gary J. Arthur Community Center; Elkridge Landing Middle School; Long Gate Park & Ride |
A house full of files may need another arrangement. The event can finish early when trucks fill. You cannot count on it to handle every estate's papers before a house sale closes.
The County asks you to bring sensitive documents. Put ordinary junk mail and catalogues in the recycling. Remove file folders, binder clips and anything other than paper from shred boxes. Shredded paper cannot go in Howard County's kerbside recycling. Before paying for shredding, separate anything you can simply recycle.

Separate medicines from home-care equipment
You may find prescription bottles, needles, a walker and a hospital bed in a bedroom used for care. They need to go to different places. Before adding equipment to the cleanout, check its labels and paperwork. Look for rented or borrowed items that should go back to the supplier.
Howard County Police lists permanent medication drop-off points. These include the Northern District Station in Ellicott City and Southern District Station in Laurel. The listed sites accept unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medicines. They exclude liquids and sharps. Needles cannot go with pills just because they came from the same bedside cabinet. Check where to take anything the medication boxes exclude.
For household needles, the County says to use an empty plastic bottle, such as a detergent bottle. Put the cap on when it is full. Put it in the rubbish. Keep loose sharps out of bags the crew must lift. The County also lists pharmacy and take-back options for sharps. Check the service before you hand them over.

Check which care items can be reused
Howard County offers a way to pass on durable medical equipment through the Loan Closet partnership. You can use it at Alpha Ridge's Residents' Convenience Center. It accepts walkers, manual wheelchairs, canes, bathing aids and portable or modular ramps.
It does not accept hospital beds, CPAP machines, oxygen tanks, broken equipment or items with missing pieces. Bear this in mind if someone promises to “donate all the medical equipment.” List each item before the crew loads it. Confirm where each will go. Keep accessories with the equipment they belong to. Check whether cylinders belong to a supplier before treating them as estate property.
You can find the general vehicle-access rules on the county page. Do not assume the hauler's truck can enter the Residents' Convenience Center just because it accepts reusable equipment. Ask how the crew will deliver accepted equipment. Ask what happens if the reuse programme turns something down. Record whether those items will come back, stay at the house or go elsewhere by agreement.

Walk through the house before calling it finished
Use your agreed room list to check cupboards, closets and outbuildings. Write down anything left because it needs specialist handling or a later decision. “House cleared” should not hide a cabinet of medicines still to sort out or a locked shed nobody opened.
Howard County says its recycling containers belong to the address. They must stay there when the resident moves. Mark the County cart to stay. Clearly mark goods awaiting collection too. The County says to keep donation items close to the house so crews do not collect them by mistake.
Keep the final invoice and agreed item list with the estate records. If the quote promised separate destinations, ask for receipts showing where those items went. Check the finished rooms against the agreed work before accepting extra charges. Do the same before agreeing that the work is complete.
